The mixed lithograph "Untitled (1998)" by Sam Gilliam presents the artist's sustained commitment to expanding the expressive and material possibilities of printmaking within the broader field of post-war abstraction. Created in collaboration with the Rutgers Center for Innovative Print and Paper and published by the College Art Association, the work integrates traditional lithographic methods with mixed media elements applied by hand on handmade paper. The result is a richly layered composition whose interaction of color, texture, and rhythm reflects Gilliam's distinctive fusion of color field painting, collage, and sculptural form. The surface of the print reveals Gilliam's characteristic engagement with improvisation and process. Areas of saturated pigments interact with more subdued passages, producing a dynamic visual structure that recalls the physicality of his draped paintings and the spatial complexity of his constructed works. By fusing media and manipulating the properties of the support, Gilliam transforms the image into a multidimensional field that emphasizes movement, balance, and chromatic tension. This approach highlights his role in challenging the conventional boundaries between painting, printmaking, and three-dimensional composition. Editioned in 29/60, the work is signed, dated, and numbered along the bottom margin. The sheet measures 21.5 x 22 inches, presented in a blonde wood museum frame measuring 28 x 29 x 3 inches with plexiglass. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from the gallery, Untitled is a significant example of Gilliam's innovative practice in the late 1990s and contributes to his lasting legacy as a pivotal figure in twentieth-century American abstraction.

Presentation

Sam Gilliam was an esteemed American artist known for his innovative approach to abstract painting. He was born on November 30, 1933, in Tupelo, Mississippi. Gilliam's artistic journey began in the 1960s when he moved to Washington, D.C., and became associated with the Washington Color School, a group of artists exploring color field painting.

Gilliam's breakthrough came in the late 1960s when he began experimenting with a unique technique of draping and suspending his canvases, freeing them from traditional stretcher bars. These vibrant, draped canvases became his signature style, blurring the boundaries between painting and sculpture. Through his use of color, form, and movement, Gilliam created immersive and dynamic art experiences.

His groundbreaking contributions to the art world have been widely recognized and celebrated. Gilliam's artworks have been exhibited in prominent museums and galleries worldwide, solidifying his position as a significant figure in contemporary art. He died in Washington in June, 2022.
