Presentation

Phillip Hua addresses environmental concerns through the use of everyday materials like newspapers, construction paper, light, and time. In the Re: Action series, the artist works on the relationship between nature and commerce, and the aesthetic boundaries of painting, collage, and digital art are themes explored in this series. He contemplates nature's role as a commodity in contemporary life. Compositions of animals, flowers, and trees, reminiscent of Chinese brush painting, are digitally painted on financial newspapers.

His work has been exhibited in galleries and art fairs nationally and internationally. Selected as one of five artists to exhibit at the Marin Museum of Contemporary Art. Among jurors who have included his work into group exhibitions are Lucinda Barnes (Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive), Betti Sue Hertz (YBCA), Karin Adams (Oakland Museum), Caitlin Haskill (San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art), Naima J. Keith (The Studio Museum), Meg Shiffler and JD Beltran (SF Arts Commission). His work has been reviewed by Art Practical, The San Francisco Chronicle, SFWeekly, California Home + Design magazine, White Hot Magazine of Contemporary Art, Interior Design magazine, and 7x7 magazine, among othhers. Hua is adjunct faculty at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco where he teaches Digital Media.
