Biography

Born in 1987, Thảo Nguyên Phan is a Vietnamese artist. Phan received her MFA in painting and drawing from the School of the Art institute of Chicago in 2014. 

Originally trained as a painter, Phan’s œuvre encompasses installations, videography and film. Combining mythology and folklore with contemporary discussions around issues such as the ecological crisis and food security, Phan’s artworks are an investigation of the environmental and social challenges faced by Vietnam. 

Exhibitions of Phan’s work have taken place internationally, most recently at the 59th edition of the Venice Biennale (2022) and at the Tate St Ives (2022). In 2018 Phan received the Han Nefkens Foundation-LOOP Barcelona Video Art Production Award. 

In addition to her artistic practice, Phan is the co-founder of Art Labor. An artistic collective intended to develop projects which support the local community.
