Description
Entropê, 2014-2015 Glass, copper oxide, copper, solid oak Glass element: 23.5 x 13.6 cm / Pedestal table: 104 x 52 x 52 cm Edition of 3 + 2 EA Made by CIRVA, Marseille (glass) / Atelier Marc Descarrega, Paris (cabinetmaking) "I worked at the International Center for Research on Glass and Plastic Arts (CIRVA) for a period that spanned two years. The work entitled" Entropê "stems from my observation of the blower: from the preparation of the workshop to the precise and repetitive gestures of the craftsman, through his panoply of tools, of which the cane is the keystone. I wanted to create a sculpture that would also evoke the rotational movement applied to the cane during hot work. The shape of the spinning top emerged. At the same time, my interest in fluxes led me to reflect on the electrical properties of glass: at low temperature, it is insulation while it becomes conductive at high temperature. I then stopped on another o bjet, the high voltage line insulator, to design a hybrid sculpture that mixes this shape and that of a top. During the working sessions at CIRVA, I always imagined that the insulating character of solid glass should coexist with its conductive counterpart, represented here by a copper plate on which the object would quite simply be placed. The question of the pedestal then arose. To extend the artisanal process of making the work, I turned to a cabinetmaker and we designed solid oak furniture, according to my conceptual and aesthetic expectations. One of the main characteristics that I wanted to give to this pedestal table with its simple and refined shapes was to appear timeless. When we look at the final device, we can think, by its design and craftsmanship, that it emanates from another time. "

Presentation

Dominique Blais was born in 1974 in Châteaubriand, France. He lives and works in Paris.

From the very beginning of his artistic practice in the mid-2000s, Dominique Blais has always developed his work in light of contextual logic. Space, temporality and constraint (s) are thus the subjects and / or the objects that the artist invests and questions in order to develop a conceptual and formal response while working with the predominant elements of his approach: the sensitive and physical perception of our environment, the report to the invisible and the inaudible, or, amongst others, the materialization of time.

The question of materials, both physical and evanescent, is substantial in his work. Not limited to a particular eld, he expands his visual vocabulary through the use of a great range of mediums and techniques (drawing, ceramics, photography, installation, sound, video, etc.) that allows him to conceive and elaborate proposals echoing the problems of his research process.
