Digital

The term digital refers to the electronic technology used to generate, store, and process data. This can be divided into positive or non-positive states. Positive as in the data is represented by the number 1 and non-positive data is represented by the number 0. When data is stored or transmitted, it is communicated as a string of 1s or 0s. Beyond this, each of these digits is attributed as a bit. When a string of bits is grouped together, it is known as a byte.

Before the boom of digitalization, analog was the prime technology used to transmit electricity. This form of technology communicates data as electronic signals, at differing amplitudes and frequencies in order to transmit carrier waves. Historically, analog has been the main technology used to broadcast television and administer phone calls.

Beyond digital technology itself, digitalization has had a massive impact on culture. At present, populations use digital tools to communicate with one another on cell phones, social media, and more. Nowadays, digital technology is predominantly used for communications media and graphics. This form of media requires satellite and fiber optic transmission. Digital data is converted from a computer with the use of a modem to analog signals on phone lines. It is also used to convert analog phone signals to digital information on computers. Digital tools, although unseen, are boundless and keep the digital world alive and well.

Artists, like humans around the world, are also affected by digital technology. It has impacted artists universally, leaving traces behind on many an artwork… Explore artworks rooted in digitalization!
