Tranquilo no llueve, Circa 2023

Luis Maraver

Luis Maraver is a Spanish contemporary artist whose practice is grounded in a sustained exploration of material, surface, and the temporal dimension of painting. His work is characterized by a process-driven approach in which pigments, binders, and often natural or mineral elements are layered, altered, and reworked over time.

Rather than treating painting as a purely representational medium, Maraver approaches it as a site of transformation. Its compositions frequently emerge through accumulation and erosion, where forms are not immediately given but gradually revealed through successive interventions. This method results in surfaces that retain visible traces of their own making, allowing the viewer to perceive time as an active component within the work.

His visual language operates between abstraction and figuration. While certain works may evoke landscapes, architectural fragments, or symbolic motifs, these references remain embedded within the material structure of the painting rather than explicitly defined. The image is therefore not imposed but discovered through process.

A defining aspect of Maraver's practice is his use of raw and often unconventional materials, which contribute to the density and physical presence of the surface. This emphasis on matter aligns his work with broader post-war painterly traditions that prioritize gesture, substance, and the autonomy of the medium.

Maraver's work has been presented in galleries and exhibitions in Spain and internationally, where it has been noted for its restrained palette, material depth, and the tension it maintains between formation and dissolution.
