Description
The artist composes here a dense and rhythmic collage. She assembles fragments of press, show posters, and urban images. The gaze circulates between Broadway titles and splashes of primary colors.
The composition plays on superposition. Typographic texts intertwine with portraits and iconic symbols. The Lion King is alongside advertisements for drinks and yellow taxis.
The space is saturated. Each layer adds a temporal and geographical dimension. Verticality dominates the whole, evoking the effervescence of a metropolis.
The background reveals touches of blue and ochre. These nuances bring a luminous breath to the midst of organized chaos.
The execution testifies to a precision in cutting and arrangement. The contrast between the textual areas and the pictorial areas creates a constant visual dialogue.
The whole ends with a night scene at the bottom of the page, where silhouettes rise towards a fragmented sky.
Presentation
An English teacher by profession, Paris-based Isabelle Hirtzig began her career as an artist through the medium of watercolor. Through her light touch of the paintbrush, she is able to capture much emotive feeling. Her work depicts scenes based on subjects as diverse as flowers, Parisian scenes, landscapes, animals and portraiture. Her focus remains on the psyche and art—its sensuality and softness are perfectly accentuated through the watercolor medium.
