"Set Table" by the renowned Ukrainian artist Viktor Konotopsky, inspired by the expressive modernism of Béla Kádár, is a vivid reimagining of a still life through a prism of abstract geometry and bold color. The painting transforms a traditional table setting—cups, dishes, bottles—into a dynamic interplay of shapes and tones. Angular forms, stylized shadows, and rhythmic patterns create a feeling of motion and harmony, while the palette of soft pastels juxtaposed with intense primaries adds emotional depth. Konotopsky's interpretation doesn't merely depict objects—it animates them. Through this abstract composition, he conveys a sense of order and intimacy found in everyday domestic rituals. The influence of Kádár can be felt in the decorative elements, layering of planes, and the dreamlike logic that blurs the line between reality and imagination. Ultimately, the work celebrates the poetic beauty of the mundane, inviting viewers to see the ordinary through a lens of color, structure, and vibrant life.
Presentation
Viktor Konotopsky was born in 1967 in the village of Maleshkovka, Nedrigailovsky district, Sumy region.
Graduated from the Kharkiv State Art School and the Faculty of Arts of the Saratov State Pedagogical University named after Makarenko.
Worked as a drawing and drafting teacher, and an artist in the advertising field.
In the 90s, he lived and worked in Poland (Krakow and Szczecin) and St. Petersburg.
Viktor had many temptations to catch some fashionable artistic disease, but he remained himself.
Judging his painting by the standards of world artistic fashion is as absurd as declaring love with the memorized words of a popular literary hero. In this sense, it is naive, but the naivety of a professionally educated person. His paintings are realistic, although stylized. The landscapes are easily recognizable, but they contain a generalization leading to an image.
