Description
A haunting presence emerges from a muted palette. This 2020 mixed media painting explores the depths of the female psyche. The figure reclines in a state of vulnerable suspension. Bold brushstrokes carve out the anatomy with raw intensity. Shadows slice across the skin. They create a tension between visibility and concealment. The composition challenges traditional perceptions of the nude. It transforms the body into a site of psychological inquiry. An oversized eye dominates the face. It watches the viewer with an unsettling clarity. This gaze reverses the power dynamic. The subject is no longer a passive object of desire. She becomes an active observer of her own confinement. The artist employs an experimental approach to anatomy. Distorted proportions emphasize an inner emotional truth over physical accuracy. Earthy tones blend into a hazy, atmospheric background. The space feels claustrophobic yet intimate. Every layer of paint adds to a narrative of empowerment and struggle. This artwork confronts the complexities of gender and identity. It captures a moment of silent, fearless introspection. The focus remains on the heavy weight of the gaze and the curve of a solitary foot.
Presentation
Dzovig Arnelian (b. 1996) is a Beirut-based Lebanese-Armenian artist whose works address themes related to gender roles, feminism, and the criticism of patriarchy. Her practice is mainly focused on painting and exploring her body as her paint brush, etching, engraving, and photography. Her depiction of deeply personal subjects is bold yet sensitive, offering a view of her world in an intimate, subtle and vulnerable manner.
Arnelian's contemporary expressionist style is typified by her use of bold and vibrant colors and she also experiments with versatile mediums, using material from her everyday life that evoke feelings of sensuality, love, fertility, and intimacy. Arnelian's bold yet delicate expression challenges prevalent stereotypes about femininity, sexuality and feelings we trap and express in our bodies.
Arnelian obtained her bachelor's degree in plastic arts in 2019 and later completed her master's degree in fine arts in 2021 from the Lebanese University. She held her first solo exhibition "24 Universes" in 2020 at Artlab Gallery in Beirut and has since participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Egypt, Spain, the United States and Japan. Her works have also been acquired by many private collectors from across the world.
Dzovig Arnelian is also the founder of Arneli Art Gallery.
