Description
A raw gaze captures the viewer in this evocative mixed media painting from 2019. The portrait emerges through a series of urgent, gestural lines. Dark charcoal strokes define the contours of the face and shoulders with an unfiltered intensity. The artist employs a limited palette of earthy ochre and deep blue accents. These colors bleed into the cream-colored background, creating a sense of atmospheric tension.
The composition reflects a daring approach to the human form. Every smudge and scratch speaks to an exploration of identity and vulnerability. The figure possesses a haunting presence, rendered with a fearless intimacy. This artwork avoids traditional polish to embrace a visceral, emotional truth. The heavy outlines contrast with the translucent washes of pigment. This technique emphasizes the psychological weight of the subject. The expression remains ambiguous, hovering between sorrow and resilience. A subtle blue shadow cuts across the forehead, adding a layer of modern melancholy to the figurative style. The piece concludes with a series of rapid, sweeping marks that anchor the torso to the page.
Presentation
Dzovig Arnelian (b. 1996) is a Beirut-based Lebanese-Armenian artist whose works address themes related to gender roles, feminism, and the criticism of patriarchy. Her practice is mainly focused on painting and exploring her body as her paint brush, etching, engraving, and photography. Her depiction of deeply personal subjects is bold yet sensitive, offering a view of her world in an intimate, subtle and vulnerable manner.
Arnelian's contemporary expressionist style is typified by her use of bold and vibrant colors and she also experiments with versatile mediums, using material from her everyday life that evoke feelings of sensuality, love, fertility, and intimacy. Arnelian's bold yet delicate expression challenges prevalent stereotypes about femininity, sexuality and feelings we trap and express in our bodies.
Arnelian obtained her bachelor's degree in plastic arts in 2019 and later completed her master's degree in fine arts in 2021 from the Lebanese University. She held her first solo exhibition "24 Universes" in 2020 at Artlab Gallery in Beirut and has since participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Egypt, Spain, the United States and Japan. Her works have also been acquired by many private collectors from across the world.
Dzovig Arnelian is also the founder of Arneli Art Gallery.
