Light, 2020

Jose Ricardo Contreras Gonzalez

This artwork presents a mesmerizing scene dominated by a glowing cube suspended in an ethereal mist, casting an enigmatic light onto the figures below. The composition is shrouded in mystery, with shadowy silhouettes of people gathered in the foreground, seemingly entranced by the luminous object. The dimly lit environment amplifies the cube's radiance, creating a stark contrast that captivates the viewer's attention. The misty atmosphere imbues the scene with a surreal, dreamlike quality, blurring the lines between reality and imagination. This piece uniquely explores themes of illumination and curiosity, drawing the observer into its depths with an evocative interplay of light and shadow. The painting's use of chiaroscuro highlights the mystique of the scene, inviting contemplation on the nature of enlightenment and human intrigue.

José Ricardo Contreras González's work revolves around the painting. The artist, a native of Bucaramanga, holds a Master of Arts from the Universidad Industrial in Santander. As a result of his work, he has held solo and group exhibitions in Colombia and Spain. The artist explores the image through the examination of physical and digital records involving photography, film, and other artistic expressions. Currently, its process is guided by two investigations that are conducted in parallel. The first reflects on the mechanisms of representation of reality, the images of flow, and their implications, and the second investigates the landscape and migration processes, using the review of domestic archives, literature, and fieldwork as a resource.
