Description
The work is constructed as an object box in a special way. In the background there is a mirror. At a distance of approx. 7 cm is the front glass plate. Rectangular cutouts of envelopes or postcards are glued on the inside of the glass plate. These are fragments resulting from cut stamps. All stamps are oriented inwards towards the mirror. You can only see them when you look between the fragments. Then an imaginary space opens between the stamps not directly visible and their reflection. The stamps themselves point to another theme. They are all stamps from the former GDR, where the artist grew up. Many show the torn Palace of the Republic in East Berlin. Thus the ironically sounding title "Palace of the Turnaround" is created.
The work sets mementos in completely new contexts and opens up not only optically imaginary, but also new mental spaces.
Presentation
Stefan Nestler was born in Freiberg, Saxony, in 1962. From 1988 to 1992, he studied photography under Professor Arno Fischer at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig. In 1992, he received the *Sächsische Zeitung* Art Prize. A working grant from the Berlin Cultural Fund Foundation (Stiftung Kulturfonds Berlin) enabled him to undertake an extensive study trip to Southeast Asia in 1993. In 2009, the Leonhardi-Museum Dresden presented his first solo museum exhibition. His works have been shown in numerous exhibitions both in Germany and abroad.
