Description
This artwork presents a mesmerizing interplay between light and shadow, capturing a scene of poignant human interaction beneath a vast sky. The composition is divided into contrasting halves, with a soft, pastel-hued daylight scene on the left and a deep, navy nighttime scene on the right. In the daylight section, ephemeral, blurred figures congregate in a dreamlike setting. The haze suggests a bustling crowd, yet each figure appears isolated, exuding a sense of introspection amid the collective. The distant silhouette of a town or city scape is visible, its faint outlines lending an air of nostalgia and timelessness. On the right half, under the serene glow of a full moon, the night scene evokes tranquility. Fewer figures are present, each one distinct against the darker backdrop. The moonlight casts long shadows, enhancing the contrast between light and dark, illuminating the water’s reflective surface below. Unique to this artwork is its dual representation of time and atmosphere within a single frame. The seamless transition between day and night symbolizes the passage of time, underscored by the constant human presence. This duality invites the viewer to ponder themes of community, solitude, and the perpetual cycle of life. The artist employs gentle brushstrokes and a muted palette to evoke emotion, making the piece both calming and provocative.
Presentation
Born in 1969 in Schaffhausen in Switzerland, Christine Seiterle studied design, painting and drawing in different European countries (Germany, Austria and Switzerland). Painter and illustrator since 1990, she lives and works between Switzerland and Paris.
Her travels in Norway, Italy, Canada and New York have influenced a lot her pictorial style. The artist inspires herself with her daily life to realize her artworks, in a figurative and narrative style. The citizens, her main subjects, are staged in their everyday life, with a grey or white background, which eliminates any idea of time or place. For more clearness she reduces her composition to the essential elements, creating a clear and direct message. Which allows the viewer to only focus on the behaviour and the movements of the characters.
Today her artworks are presented in public institutions as the Allerheiligen museum or the municipal museum of Schaffhausen. In 2019, the Allerheiligen museum hosted Christine Seiterle's exhibition ZeitRäume and published the catalogue with the same name.
