Description
Mediterranean House is a contemporary oil painting in which Zakhar Shevchuk captures the quiet architectural rhythm of southern Europe. The stone façade, modest windows, weathered shutters, and solitary palm tree form a balanced composition defined by sunlight and restraint.
Unlike dramatic seascapes or expressive urban scenes, this work relies on subtle tonal transitions and structural harmony. Layers of beige, pale ochre, and muted grey articulate the textured surface of the building. The red-tinted roof and distant green hills create depth while preserving compositional calm. The scene conveys warmth without exaggeration – a contemplative moment suspended in midday stillness.
The painting reflects Shevchuk’s disciplined approach to material and proportion. Brushstrokes remain visible, giving the surface tactile presence, yet the structure of the house is clearly defined. The architectural form becomes a symbol of permanence and quiet endurance rather than decorative scenery.
Created in 2015 during the artist’s Independent Figurative Period, Mediterranean House expands his exploration beyond portraiture into architectural landscape. For collectors of contemporary European landscape painting, architectural art, and refined oil on canvas works with subtle Mediterranean atmosphere, this piece offers compositional stability and timeless serenity.
Presentation
“I try to simplify the form to the point when it feels that nothing else shall be removed and only the essential elements remain. I transfer my impressions and self-reflections about objects into my paintings. I express what I feel rather than how I see, often arriving somewhere between figurative and abstract art." Zakhar Shevchuk
Zakhar Shevchuk is a young professional painter and draftsman, he holds a master in arts degree from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv, Ukraine) and now himself teaches at the academy. His artworks are held in public and private collections worldwide, furthermore, he often participates in various public projects, such as painting murals and other monumental installations.
With years Zakhar's artistic style moved away from academic realism (which always tended closer to expressionism) and towards the style that in somewhere on the edge between figurative art and abstraction. In many of his works, even those that may seem as fully abstract ones, you will find some elements that were intentionally added, aiming to trick your brain into believing that you have finally found something recognisable, something that matches the reality, but then you suddenly loose it, starting the search over and over again.
