RITCHELLY OLIVEIRA
In The Lap Of Your Caress, 2023
Charcoal and acrylic on canvas
210 × 200 cm | 82.7 × 78.7 in
In , Ritchelly Oliveira explores the transformative power of tenderness through an emotionally charged composition where intimacy becomes both shelter and vulnerability. Two figures are intertwined in a silent embrace: one offers physical support, while the other appears suspended between presence and introspection, suggesting that care can exist even when words fail.
Executed primarily in charcoal, Oliveira's remarkable command of realism brings extraordinary depth and sensitivity to the human figure. Every subtle variation of light, texture and expression contributes to a psychological portrait that extends beyond likeness, inviting the viewer into a contemplative emotional space. The restrained use of acrylic creates delicate visual contrasts, reinforcing the atmosphere of stillness without distracting from the central narrative.
A flock of birds surrounds the upper figure, partially obscuring the face. A recurring element throughout Oliveira's practice, these birds do not represent freedom but rather the invisible emotional burdens, memories and affections that accompany us throughout life. They function as poetic metaphors for the complexity of human relationships, simultaneously protecting, concealing and revealing the emotional landscape of the subjects.
The generous scale of the painting amplifies its emotional impact, allowing the viewer to experience the embrace as an immersive encounter. Rather than portraying a specific moment, reflects on universal themes of affection, trust, emotional inheritance and the profound human need to be held—both physically and emotionally.
Balancing technical virtuosity with conceptual depth, this museum-scale work exemplifies Ritchelly Oliveira's distinctive contribution to contemporary figurative art, where hyperrealism becomes a vehicle for exploring identity, memory and the fragile architecture of human connection.
Presentation
Ritchelly Oliveira, visual artist, began his work in 2012, shortly after enrolling in visual arts at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), he found in the human figure a space to present his speech about what he understands most profoundly present in affective relationships. He talks about what he suspects to be love and, believing it to be a universal feeling. It proposes what is common to men, even knowing that this love brings something that is also individual and particular.
Believing that affective relationships are built from the individual and how their surroundings interfere with them, we try to rescue here the possibility of constructing discourses about love, especially black love. The importance of reflecting together on issues such as sexuality, emotional responsibility and colorism are necessary canons in this invitation to embrace the dangerous and exclusionary ideals of romantic love that circulate in our environments.
