Where the Light Begins, 2020

Zakhar Shevchuk

Where the Light Begins (2020) by Ukrainian contemporary artist Zakhar Shevchuk is a captivating oil painting that transforms a tranquil coastal scene into a subtle exploration of perception. A luminous reflection cuts through the composition, suggesting sunlight shimmering across water, yet the sky above remains overcast, offering no visible source of light. This unexpected visual tension immediately draws the viewer in and invites closer inspection.

Blending contemporary landscape painting with semi-abstract expression, Shevchuk challenges the viewer’s expectations of reality. The surface begins to shift between water, light, and abstraction, creating a moment of uncertainty that is both visually calming and intellectually engaging. This interplay between what is seen and what is assumed is central to the artist’s practice, where familiar forms are reduced to their essential elements while retaining emotional resonance.

With its refined palette of blues, greens, and muted earth tones, combined with expressive textures, Where the Light Begins is well suited for modern interiors and collections focused on contemporary, thought-provoking art. The artist is open to commissions, offering collectors the opportunity to acquire similarly nuanced works.
