Description
"The Boy and the Bird in the Chest" by Ritchelly Oliveira is a captivating piece that explores themes of introspection and vulnerability against a backdrop of pure white. At the center of the canvas stands a black man, his presence commanding yet contemplative.
Resting on the man's left hand, positioned gently against his chest, is a bird. Unlike the usual portrayal of birds in Oliveira's work, this bird is not in flight; instead, it is depicted at rest. This imagery suggests a moment of stillness and calm, contrasting with the usual symbolism of birds representing fragility and perpetual flight.
The title, "The Boy and the Bird in the Chest," evokes a sense of innocence and wonder, hinting at a deeper narrative behind the painting.
The choice of a black man as the central figure adds layers of complexity to the painting, perhaps suggesting a deeper exploration of identity and self-discovery. The white background serves to highlight the contrast between the man and the bird, as well as the purity and simplicity of the emotions being conveyed.
Through "The Boy and the Bird in the Chest," Oliveira invites viewers to contemplate the beauty and vulnerability of the human experience, as well as the transformative power of moments of stillness and connection.
Presentation
Ritchelly Oliveira, visual artist, began his work in 2012, shortly after enrolling in visual arts at the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), he found in the human figure a space to present his speech about what he understands most profoundly present in affective relationships. He talks about what he suspects to be love and, believing it to be a universal feeling. It proposes what is common to men, even knowing that this love brings something that is also individual and particular.
Believing that affective relationships are built from the individual and how their surroundings interfere with them, we try to rescue here the possibility of constructing discourses about love, especially black love. The importance of reflecting together on issues such as sexuality, emotional responsibility and colorism are necessary canons in this invitation to embrace the dangerous and exclusionary ideals of romantic love that circulate in our environments.
