This painting combines a profile portrait by Italian artist Antonio del Pollaiuolo with the style of a collage by Matisse. I often use a "what if" approach to stimulate my imagination and combine art works from different historical periods. It's a way of playing with visual ideas, just as jazz musicians play with combining different musical themes. The results are often surprising and I hope the viewer enjoys the game. This is an acrylic painting on canvas and is unframed. It is wired for hanging.

Artist Statement:
Since I began exhibiting in 1985 still life painting has been the foundation of my work. Favourite subjects include fruit, fabric, shells, books and pottery. I am also fascinated and inspired by historic art and so about 15 years ago I began including images by artists I admire in some of my paintings.
Recently I have expanded these references to include wrapped images of historic paintings and objects, and trompe-l'oeil studies of famous art. Further developments include using historic artworks as a starting point for improvisations, much as jazz musicians make variations on an old melody to create a new composition.
In this way I am able to pay homage to the great art of the past and by bringing past and present together I hope to entice the viewer to contemplate the way art is the enduring expression of our shared human experience.
