Description
This artwork presents a minimalist landscape of haunting beauty, where the simplicity of shapes and colors creates a calming and mysterious atmosphere. The canvas is dominated by wide horizontal bands of gradient colors. In the upper part, a deep, intense blue evokes a twilight sky or a calm sea under a stormy sky. The texture of the blue is subtly varied, adding a sense of stagnant movement, like a waiting storm. The central part of the canvas is a deliberate transition between dark shades of blue and a lighter space. A thin line of soft green clearly separates the two main chromatic areas, reminiscent of a horizon line on a deserted beach, offering a sense of distance and infinity. The bottom of the painting is decorated with a wide band of off-white. This area, which contrasts starkly with the upper blue, may represent an expanse of sand, bathed in soft, diffuse light. The delicate, horizontal brushstrokes create a sense of calm and stillness, reinforced by the absence of disruptive elements. The entire composition is based on a perfect balance between appeasement and latent dynamism, expressed by fluid but resolute transitions of colors and textures. Through this work, the artist invites us to an introspective contemplation, evoking feelings of tranquility but also of mysterious expectation. It is a piece where sobriety becomes strength, where each nuance and each stroke play a crucial role in carrying the viewer into a contemplative and emotional exploration.
Presentation
Self-taught, Benoît Guérin adopts a resolutely abstract approach, where colors and materials meet in an instinctive and spontaneous impulse. His creative process, marked by urgency, alternates between construction, erasure, and restarting.
"The subject of my paintings often appears in spite of myself, I let myself be drawn into the material."
Working primarily in acrylic, he sometimes combines inks and walnut stains, mixing the colors directly on the canvas. Painting on the floor, he physically immerses himself in the creation, where each gesture—scraping, crushing, throwing—gives birth to vibrant and textured works.
Black, omnipresent in his compositions, sculpts light and reveals striking contrasts. Inspired by figures such as Soulages, Marfaing, and De Staël, Benoît explores a captivating chiaroscuro, where matter and emotion come together.
Rooted in abstraction, his landscapes also offer a transformed vision of reality. Colors combine or clash to create new sensations.
Based in Vouillé, in Deux-Sèvres, he draws on the singular and irrational pleasure of painting "Let yourself be carried away by your own feelings, as I let myself be guided by the material." Each canvas becomes a space of freedom, open to personal interpretations.
Benoît has exhibited at numerous exhibitions and has received several awards.
His art, constantly evolving, reflects a quest for balance between instinct and reflection, always driven by the desire to renew himself.
