Description
Continental Dash, 2024 by Roberto Fonfría. Mixed Media Collage (canvas, china marker, archival polyester film, thread) on Bristol acid free paper.Image size: 17 in. H x 14 in. W Frame size: 21 in. H x 16.5 in. W x 1 in. D.
This intriguing artwork features a group of disembodied legs, clad in a variety of pants, emerging from beneath a large, opaque black rectangle that dominates the upper portion. The pants range from casual jeans to formal trousers, showcasing diverse styles and textures, while the feet are rooted in a uniform shadow. The stark contrast between the vibrant colors of the pants and the somber black rectangle captures attention, creating a sense of anonymity and mystery. The composition's simplicity highlights the juxtaposition between individuality and uniformity. Framed in light wood, this artwork invites viewers to ponder themes of identity, exclusion, and concealment. Its minimalist yet profound approach encourages deeper reflection on societal constructs and personal expression.
Presentation
Roberto Fonfría lives and works in Miami, Fl. He was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1969. Roberto Fonfría creates stories through a random mix of found images, photographs, drawings, and words. He combines these elements and builds layers and textures using acrylics, common objects, and collage. His work explores human behavior and social rules with a critic eye and humor, touching on personal themes such as dreams, fears, and memories. The images come from old magazines, advertising and photo albums collected at thrift stores. By extracting them from their natural context, he reconstructs them by adding references to popular culture as well as common phrases and insights that come from his Venezuelan childhood.
