This mixed media artwork presents an intriguing exploration of identity and self-perception. Mounted on a tan background, four distinct faces are depicted in grayscale, each altered with vivid splashes of color and handwritten annotations. In the top left section, a face is obscured with a red strip bearing the text "NOT EVERYONE HAS." This striking element instantly captures attention, questioning the universal nature of experiences and identity. Adjacent, another face features additional red and blue markings, drawing the viewer into a narrative of imagined self as expressed by "SHE LIKED TO IMAGINE HERSELF AS A PEAR." Below, the lower left face is captioned with, "SHE SINGS THE PAST, WILL RING THE PAIN, AND SHE WILL HEAR HER OWN VOICE ON THE TAPE," providing a poetic yet cryptic insight into memory and emotion. Beside it, the final image is bluntly marked with the phrase "THE WITCH SAID SHE WAS A CAT," further emphasizing themes of transformation and mythical identity. Roberto Fonfría lives and works in Miami, Fl. He was born in Caracas, Venezuela in 1969. Roberto Fonfría creates stories through a random mix of found images, photographs, drawings, and words. He combines these elements and builds layers and textures using acrylics, common objects, and collage. His work explores human behavior and social rules with a critic eye and humor, touching on personal themes such as dreams, fears, and memories. The images come from old magazines, advertising and photo albums collected at thrift stores. By extracting them from their natural context, he reconstructs them by adding references to popular culture as well as common phrases and insights that come from his Venezuelan childhood.
