Presentation

Georges Mathieu (1921-2012) is one of the major figures of 20th-century abstract painting and the founder of Lyrical Abstraction, a movement that is established in Europe as the counterpart of American Abstract Expressionism. Born in Boulogne-sur-Mer, he studied literature, law, and philosophy at the University of Lille before dedicating himself to painting starting in 1942. Self-taught, he very early on developed a practice based on the spontaneity of the gesture, the speed of execution, and creative energy.

As early as 1944, he experimented with innovative techniques, notably dripping, direct application of paint from the tube (which he calls tubism), and a gestural pictorial writing that made him a precursor to Action Painting in Europe. In 1947, he organized several militant exhibitions to defend a painting liberated from the constraints of geometric abstraction and became the main theorist of Lyrical Abstraction, gathering around this aesthetic artists such as Hans Hartung, Simon Hantai, Jean Degottex, Zao Wou-Ki, Chu Teh-Chun, Serge Poliakoff or Gérard Schneider. His work is distinguished by abstract calligraphy, monumental compositions, a dazzling gesture, and an unprecedented relationship between the act of painting and public performance.

Visionary, Georges Mathieu is also considered one of the pioneers of artistic performances and happenings, realizing large paintings in front of the public and photographers from the early 1950s, several years before this practice became common. Among his emblematic works are Hommage au maréchal de Turenne (1952), La Bataille de Bouvines (1954), and Les Capétiens partout ! (1954), in which he associates gestural abstraction, references to French History, and monumentality. His plastic vocabulary is based on oil on canvas, large formats, chromatic contrasts, projections of matter, calligraphic lines, and an extremely rapid execution intended to capture the creative moment.

In parallel with his activity as a painter, Mathieu plays an essential role as an art critic, theorist, lecturer, and author of numerous essays dedicated to art, philosophy, and the social role of the artist. His influence extends far beyond the field of painting and contributes to renewing the reflection on contemporary creation. In 1975, he was elected to the Academy of Fine Arts, a major recognition of his contribution to the history of French art.

Throughout his career, Georges Mathieu has enjoyed significant international recognition. He exhibits in many institutions and is the subject of solo exhibitions notably at the Musée National d'Art Moderne – Centre Pompidou, the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, the Jeu de Paume, the Palais des Papes in Avignon, the Château de Versailles as well as in many galleries in Europe, the United States and Japan. His work is today preserved in the permanent collections of the Centre Pompidou, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Tate, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Kunstmuseum Basel and many other international museums. His market is particularly dynamic and his large historical compositions are among the major works of post-war abstract art.

A precursor, theorist, and experimenter, Georges Mathieu remains an essential reference for gestural painting, Lyrical Abstraction, Informal Art, and abstract calligraphy. His legacy continues to influence contemporary artists through his approach to gesture, speed, performance, and creative freedom.
