Description
Sophie Dumont, an artist known for her ability to capture the subtle atmospheres and emotions that nature arouses, transports us into a landscape that is both dreamlike and evocative. This oil on canvas captures a vast natural expanse, where the sky, the earth and the light dialogue in a soothing harmony.
The horizontal composition of the work naturally guides the viewer's gaze through the different layers of the landscape. The first lines, blurred and slightly abstract, evoke wild grasses or dunes bathed in soft light. The eye is then drawn to more defined bands of color, representing expanses of sand and horizon lines that seem to blend into the immensity of the sky.
The palette is based on soft, natural tones: beige, blue-gray, off-white, with subtle touches of terracotta and ochre. This color combination evokes a timeless serenity, while capturing the essence of coastal or desert landscapes. The slightly blurred nuances reinforce the idea of a memory or a fleeting impression.
The expert use of brushwork and thinly layered paint gives the work a delicate, fluid texture. The transitions between colours are soft, almost ethereal, giving the painting an atmospheric quality. The play of light is treated with subtlety, recalling the variations in intensity and tone specific to natural landscapes.
invites us to reflect on the passage of time and how memories, like grains of sand, move and transform. The painting seems to capture a suspended moment, a landscape that could exist as much in reality as in memory or imagination.
With, Sophie Dumont delivers a work of great finesse, where abstraction and figuration balance each other perfectly. This painting, both contemplative and poetic, will find its place in a space that seeks to evoke the serenity and raw beauty of natural elements.
Presentation
Born in 1964 in Suresnes, near Paris, Sophie Dumont lives and works in Langrune-sur-Mer, in Normandy. Self-taught, she began to paint in 1991 and develops research focused on matter, color, and the construction of space.
Her work unfolds in several series: libraries, abstract landscapes, studios, and geometric compositions gathered under the title Interior Architectures. These ensembles explore the relationships between memory, structure, and human presence. Books become rhythms and volumes; landscapes transform into expanses of color; studios retain the signs of activity and passage. In her geometric compositions, curves and rectangles organize a space where forms can evoke an architecture, an instrument, or a silhouette without fixing themselves in a single representation.
Sophie Dumont works mainly with oil on canvas, palette knife, and brush. The painting is built slowly, through successive layers, superimpositions, scrapes, and erasures. Earlier states remain perceptible and contribute to the depth of the work. The geometry of the compositions thus dialogues with a surface marked by gesture and time.
From one series to the next, her approach maintains this same tension between construction and matter, between what appears and what remains hidden. Her works are shown in France and internationally and are featured in private collections around the world.
