Description
“The Mask of Innocence" (2025) is a visually charming yet deeply unsettling figurative painting by Ukrainian artist Zakhar Shevchuk. Executed in acrylic on a 100x75 cm canvas, this work portrays a small childlike figure standing atop a soft, domed hill, their head replaced by a giant white daisy. At first glance, the scene appears idyllic, even whimsical – surrounded by similar flowers under a brilliant blue sky. But the title, and the figure's posture, point to something far more complex.
This painting continues Shevchuk's exploration of emotional disguise and performative identity, particularly as imposed on us from early childhood. The daisy – a symbol of innocence and purity – becomes a mask, hiding the true self behind social expectations and learned behavior. Through this gentle surrealism and figurative minimalism, Shevchuk constructs a powerful commentary on the ways in which we are taught to conceal emotional truth with pleasing façades.
As with many of his works, The Mask of Innocence operates on multiple levels – aesthetic, emotional, and philosophical – offering collectors a poetic yet subversive addition to a thoughtful contemporary collection.
Presentation
“I try to simplify the form to the point when it feels that nothing else shall be removed and only the essential elements remain. I transfer my impressions and self-reflections about objects into my paintings. I express what I feel rather than how I see, often arriving somewhere between figurative and abstract art." Zakhar Shevchuk
Zakhar Shevchuk is a young professional painter and draftsman, he holds a master in arts degree from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv, Ukraine) and now himself teaches at the academy. His artworks are held in public and private collections worldwide, furthermore, he often participates in various public projects, such as painting murals and other monumental installations.
With years Zakhar's artistic style moved away from academic realism (which always tended closer to expressionism) and towards the style that in somewhere on the edge between figurative art and abstraction. In many of his works, even those that may seem as fully abstract ones, you will find some elements that were intentionally added, aiming to trick your brain into believing that you have finally found something recognisable, something that matches the reality, but then you suddenly loose it, starting the search over and over again.
