Description
Evgeniya Buravleva's new exhibition, Impressions, explores how the works of the Impressionists transformed the history of art. Over time, the places where they worked — Étretat, Giverny, Honfleur — have become cultural landmarks and destinations for artistic pilgrimage. In Impressions, Evgeniya Buravleva does not simply revisit these landscapes; she offers a contemporary reinterpretation. She examines how our perception of these places has evolved and the new meanings they acquire within the context of today's visual culture.
In this painting, Evgeniya Buravleva explores the garden as a space suspended between cultivated nature and a stage for memory. A near-supernatural light pierces through the dense greenery, illuminating a classical statue in an atmosphere of unreal stillness. The vegetal architecture frames the scene like a theatre set, evoking both a frozen past and the intimacy of a mental retreat.
As in much of Buravleva's work, human presence is absent but deeply felt. The space appears abandoned—or at least stripped of its social function—leaving only traces of what once was. The garden becomes a place of introspection and retreat, a projection of the inner self where light interacts with memory.
Through delicate brushwork and a soft, dreamlike texture, the artist continues her reflection on landscapes as mental and emotional constructions.
Presentation
Born in Kirov (Russia) in 1980, painter and draughtswoman Evgeniya Buravleva explores ideas of time and space and their relationship with the individual. The subject of her artworks is a person exhausted by the present, forced to exist in the conditions of a post-truth world, a solitary figure on the verge of making a decision. Time and space in her works are intertwined with the character, depending on their actions. They are not separate for even a moment, remaining unabsorbed and vegetative.
The concept of light also plays a key role in Buravleva’s art. Light dissolves space and familiar objects, transforming into emptiness, a white blotch. It becomes an image of what the void conceals, leaving it up to the viewer and the protagonist to determine its meaning. Buravleva finds it important to grant her characters the experience of absence in the present moment—an existence of "no one, nowhere, and never," a solitary figure in the void.
Buravleva’s works are part of the collections of the State Russian Museum, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve of History, Architecture, Art, and Landscape, as well as various regional Russian art museums.
Since 2021, she has been included in the Russian Investment Art Rating 49ART.
