Description
Evgeniya Buravleva's new exhibition, Impressions, explores how the works of the Impressionists transformed the history of art. Over time, the places where they worked — Étretat, Giverny, Honfleur — have become cultural landmarks and destinations for artistic pilgrimage.
In Impressions, Evgeniya Buravleva does not merely revisit these landscapes — she offers a contemporary reinterpretation. She examines how our perception of these places has evolved and the new meanings they acquire in the context of today's visual culture.
This work by Evgeniya Buravleva depicts the beach cabins of Trouville, aligned with almost architectural precision, in an atmosphere of absolute calm — just before the summer bustle begins.
The strict perspective of the numbered cabins with their bright blue doors evokes order, repetition, and the quiet preparation of a place awaiting life. The emptiness of the beach, the milky light, and the subtle blur creeping into the foreground create a sense of latency, almost of silent abandonment.
Here, Buravleva captures the precise moment when the stage is set, but the action has yet to begin. Through this familiar seaside setting, the artist speaks of suspended time, memories yet to come, and what remains unseen. As is often the case in her work, the piece leaves space for the viewer’s intimate projection.
Presentation
Born in Kirov (Russia) in 1980, painter and draughtswoman Evgeniya Buravleva explores ideas of time and space and their relationship with the individual. The subject of her artworks is a person exhausted by the present, forced to exist in the conditions of a post-truth world, a solitary figure on the verge of making a decision. Time and space in her works are intertwined with the character, depending on their actions. They are not separate for even a moment, remaining unabsorbed and vegetative.
The concept of light also plays a key role in Buravleva’s art. Light dissolves space and familiar objects, transforming into emptiness, a white blotch. It becomes an image of what the void conceals, leaving it up to the viewer and the protagonist to determine its meaning. Buravleva finds it important to grant her characters the experience of absence in the present moment—an existence of "no one, nowhere, and never," a solitary figure in the void.
Buravleva’s works are part of the collections of the State Russian Museum, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, the Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve of History, Architecture, Art, and Landscape, as well as various regional Russian art museums.
Since 2021, she has been included in the Russian Investment Art Rating 49ART.
