Description
The Descent of Desire by Igor Galan (2023) explores the fragile line between longing and brutality. A grotesque male profile with an unnaturally extended tongue leans toward a fragmented female figure. Her body, stark and statue-like, lies across steps leading into a shadowed space, lit faintly from above.
The blood-stained wall suggests an act of violence, amplifying the sense of unease. Desire is revealed not as a source of intimacy, but as an ambiguous and destructive force. Light and darkness, flesh and stone, attraction and threat are held in tense opposition.
Drawing on both surrealist atmospheres and visceral corporeal distortion, the work compels the viewer to face the unsettling truths embedded in human instinct.
Presentation
Igor Galan (b. 1964, Lviv, Ukraine) is a master of painting and graphic arts, known for his ability to seamlessly blend classical techniques with contemporary themes. A graduate of the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture, Galan has exhibited internationally, including in Berlin, Chicago, and Kyiv. His notable works, such as the 4-meter satirical painting “Gorbachev and His 15 Republics," showcase his talent for political commentary and visual storytelling. Held in prestigious collections, including the National Art Museum of Ukraine and Berlin's Museum Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, Galan's art reflects his mastery of both technical skill and conceptual depth. Currently, he splits his time between Kyiv, Nice, and Paris, continuing to push boundaries in his creative practice.
