Artwork location: South Africa
In this powerful painting, Florah Maphosa goes far beyond a simple celebration of color or friendship. She steps into one of Africa's most painful and complex realities: the lived experience of people with albinism. Having developed close personal relationships with artists in Zimbabwe who live with albinism, Florah understands the emotional weight of their stories—the exclusion, the myths, the danger, and the longing for acceptance.
Here, she creates a gentle but striking narrative of unity. The two women—one dark-skinned, one with albinism—sit side by side in complete harmony, sharing a moment of laughter, warmth, and ordinary joy. Their floral dresses mirror each other, symbolizing a shared humanity that transcends surface differences. The drinks marked “Cheers Girls Rock" become a quiet celebration of courage—courage to be seen, to live freely, and to stand together.
At their feet, a dog and a cat rest peacefully, reinforcing the message that coexistence is not only possible, but natural. The bold background, with its radiant contrasts, frames this intimate scene of acceptance and dignity.
Through this work, Florah breaks the silence around discrimination and transforms a painful reality into a hopeful vision. She invites viewers to recognise the equal worth of every person—those once marginalised, misunderstood, or feared. Her painting becomes a bridge, reminding us that humanity is strongest when it embraces all its shades, all its stories, and all its people.

Florah Maphosa (born 18 September 2004 in Gweru, Midlands Province, Zimbabwe) is an emerging young visual artist known for her bold, expressive portraiture celebrating Zimbabwean women. She is currently in residence at the Swiss‑Zim Heritage Gallery studio in Domboshava, Harare, where her creative voice has blossomed under the mentorship of experienced Zimbabwean artists and curators.
Her work, often featuring strong female figures in ornate headwraps rendered in vibrant color, marries pop sensibility with cultural storytelling. Highlights of her style include confident contrasts—bright hues set against deep, muted backgrounds—to convey empowerment and identity through visual impact ArtPlacerSwiss-Zim Heritage Gallery. A standout painting, “African Queen – Artgal.Online Thundorf" (2024), exemplifies both her technical finesse and emotional resonance.
Florah's growing international profile includes participation in the “An African Story" exhibition at Art International Zurich (23–25 May 2025), hosted at the historic Puls 5 hall as part of the Zurich leg of the global tour by Swiss‑Zim Heritage and Artgal.Online. Her works were displayed alongside established Zimbabwean artists such as Keith Zenda, Tonderai Mujuru, Barry Lungu, Sampson Kuvenguhwa, and Willard Mujuru, marking a significant moment in her early artistic trajectory.
In 2025, she was also nominated for the Visual Artist Award by AFAAZ (All-Female Arts and Achievement Zone), highlighting her rising influence and dedication to social themes in art Instagram.
Guided by her own heritage and strong mentorship, Florah Maphosa channels a youthful energy and commitment to empowerment through her art. Her vibrant visual language and narrative focus on resilience, identity, and community position her as one of Zimbabwe's most promising young artists—making visual storytelling into an instrument for cultural affirmation and international connection.
