Description
Gesso, acrylic, sumi-ink & paper on canvas
This striking abstract artwork captivates with its dramatic monochrome palette. Dominated by a vertical flow of stark black and white, it evokes a sense of cascading movement, reminiscent of waterfalls or cascading drapery. The artist employs heavy, textured brushstrokes, imbuing the piece with tactile depth and dimensionality. Patches of raised paint create shadows and highlights, infusing the composition with dynamic energy. The contrast between the bold black sections and the luminous whites achieves a visual harmony, drawing the viewer into its mesmerizing rhythm. Splattered and scraped textures interrupt the vertical lines, adding an element of unpredictability and raw emotion. This work stands as a testament to the power of simplicity and contrast, encouraging reflection on the interplay of light and shadow. Its abstract nature invites personal interpretation while showcasing the artist's mastery over texture and form.
Presentation
Tomo Sakurai is a Japanese artist born in 1987 who lives & works in Tokyo, Japan. She had an awakening of her talent in pencil drawing as a teenager. It was the beauty of the shadow that completely fascinated her. After she studied graphic design at Yokohama College of Art, she went ahead to the path of the black and white by self-study. Her body of work is seemingly dark and peculiar, but it portrays light, hope, essence and desire.
