Description
Acrylic, sumi-ink, paper, glass on canvas
This artwork presents a captivating study in contrast and texture. Dominated by a monochromatic palette, the piece features a texturally rich surface of layered white paint or plaster, expertly crafted to evoke a sense of rugged terrain. The tactile quality invites viewers to explore its undulating surface with their eyes. At the center, a singular, bold black rectangle commands attention, striking a perfect balance between simplicity and complexity. This stark geometric form serves as an anchor amidst the chaotic textures, evoking a sense of calm and focus. The interplay between the textured background and the smooth, unyielding black shape creates a dynamic tension, challenging the viewer's perception and inviting contemplation. This artwork, with its minimalist yet profound design, exemplifies a powerful expression of modern abstract art, where form and texture transcend conventional boundaries.
Presentation
Tomo Sakurai is a Japanese artist born in 1987 who lives & works in Tokyo, Japan. She had an awakening of her talent in pencil drawing as a teenager. It was the beauty of the shadow that completely fascinated her. After she studied graphic design at Yokohama College of Art, she went ahead to the path of the black and white by self-study. Her body of work is seemingly dark and peculiar, but it portrays light, hope, essence and desire.
