Alain Godon, Gardenworld
France  • 1964

Presentation

Alain Godon is a French painter and sculptor born on November 1, 1964, in Bourges. A singular figure on the contemporary art scene, he has developed an immediately recognizable style that blends naive art, free figuration, street art, humor, and urban poetry. His work, characterized by vibrant colors, distorted perspectives, and a joyful vision of the world, draws inspiration from both his personal experiences and his tender and playful gaze upon cities and their inhabitants.

Alain Godon's path was marked from a very early age by drawing. After the death of his father in 1975, he was raised by his architect uncle in Achicourt, in the Pas-de-Calais region, who instilled in him a passion for architecture, urban landscapes, and drawing.

In the mid-1980s, after a stint in the paratrooper commandos, he settled in Paris where he created his first ephemeral chalk drawings on the sidewalks of the Rue de Rivoli, opposite the Louvre. Noticed daily by passersby and local professionals, he continued this practice in Brighton, England, where he lived in precarious conditions while developing his artistic language. These formative years established him as a pioneer of a poetic form of street art, even before the movement's international rise.

Starting in 1988, while staying in Courchevel, Alain Godon began what he would later call his "Infantile Art," a personal style inspired by the perspective of childhood. The following year, living in Saint-Tropez, he created his first oil paintings and gradually developed the pictorial universe that would bring him renown.

His work draws on the energy of graffiti, the spontaneity of children's drawings, and a keen observation of urban spaces. Cities become his favorite playground: Paris, New York, Miami, Amsterdam, London, and Le Touquet are reinvented through teeming compositions where buildings, lampposts, birds, trees, and vehicles seem to come alive. Lines curve, perspectives shift, and colors vibrate in an optimistic and whimsical vision of reality. This unique style has been compared to free figuration, with influences sometimes reminiscent of Robert Combas or Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Deeply attached to Le Touquet-Paris-Plage, where he settled in the early 1990s, Alain Godon maintains a special relationship with the seaside resort. His first solo exhibition was held there in 1994 at the Palais de l'Europe, before he went on to exhibit extensively in France and internationally. In 2000, the Musée du Touquet-Paris-Plage dedicated a major retrospective to him.

In 2009, he created the Festival du Touquet, also known as the Rendez-vous des Artistes de Demain (Meeting of the Artists of Tomorrow), designed to promote young talent and facilitate their interaction with the public and art market professionals. This event brings together several hundred participants and demonstrates his commitment to emerging artists.

2012 marked a significant milestone with the exhibition "Extravaganza – Godon, 100 Years, 100 Works," organized at the Musée du Touquet-Paris-Plage to celebrate the resort's centenary. This major exhibition led to the publication of a book in the Musées de France collection, a rare tribute to a living artist.

His international career has developed in parallel with solo exhibitions in New York, Miami, Aspen, Los Angeles, Paris, Lille, and numerous other cities. In 2015, he was chosen to create the official illustration for the Miami Beach City Report, a testament to the recognition of his work in the United States.

Beyond painting, Alain Godon has created several monumental works in public spaces. Among the best known are the HexaGodon sculptures, unveiled in 2017 at the Jardin des Arts in Le Touquet, and the spectacular Tour Paris-Plage, a monumental sculpture installed on the Place du Centenaire to mark the 105th anniversary of the seaside resort.

A profoundly humanist artist, Alain Godon champions a positive vision of the world and, through his work, defends a form of resistance against contemporary gloom. His universe, often compared to that of Peter Pan, celebrates imagination, freedom, and wonder. Through his paintings and sculptures, he invites the viewer to rediscover a childlike perspective on the city and on life, making him one of the most singular representatives of contemporary French figurative painting
