Description
The work was painted during a plein air session of Odessa artists in the resort village of Katranka on the Black Sea coast. The painting depicts a view of the village of Lyman.
In the foreground stands a massive thistle plant, with spiny leaves and soft pink blossoms. It is so large that it dominates the entire landscape. Beyond it unfolds a panorama: a field overgrown with similar thistles, and further back, the village houses and a church crowned with an elegant spire.
The composition is built on the contrast between the pink accents of the thistle flowers and the silvery-green surroundings. Despite the restrained overall palette, the towering, tree-like thistle in the foreground creates a dramatic effect.
