Description
This artwork captures a serene nocturnal scene dominated by a deep, velvety night sky filled with ethereal, star-like specks. The sky seamlessly transitions into a tranquil waterway, flanked by abstract, angular buildings. These structures, in muted tones of gray, beige, and soft pastels, suggest a sleeping village, illuminated subtly by warm glows from scattered windows. A small, isolated sailboat elegantly glides across the water, adding a sense of motion to the stillness. The composition is crowned by a faint, golden crescent moon, casting a gentle light over the enigmatic landscape. The use of texture and layered brush strokes provides depth and intrigue, inviting viewers to explore the calm yet mysterious environment. The painting masterfully balances abstraction with recognizable forms, creating a captivating blend of dreamlike and tangible elements.
Presentation
Michael Hill an artist from Plymouth has always had a love of drawing and a fascination for the painted image as far back as he can remember. After leaving school he studied art and graphic design, but quickly became aware that illustration and fine arts were the subjects he wanted to pursue. Shortly after leaving college he worked for some years as a freelance illustrator before taking up painting full time.
My paintings have become more abstract of late but it is important to me to convey a strong sense of place together with an air of mystery. Coming from fragments of memory, the painting surface is built up through layers of colour, sometimes leaving previous areas of paint exposed, maybe to indicate the history of the work.
