Description
This painting depicts a moment of queer intimacy between two Middle Eastern men within a domestic interior, set against a maximalist couch adorned with gold and floral motifs reminiscent of traditional Lebanese homes, referencing the artist's cultural roots, while a small icon of the Virgin Mary—inspired by one in his own house— introduces a layer of spiritual and cultural symbolism, and the presence of a standing fan anchors the scene in a contemporary, everyday setting.
Presentation
Born in 2000 in Beirut and living between Beirut and Florence, Chammaa uses painting to explore his identity and origins. His figurative work, often set in minimalist landscapes, addresses themes of identity, queer intimacy, solitude, and time.
Raised in a strict religious environment against a backdrop of persistent instability in Lebanon, he developed a keen sense of difference and independence. Recurring elements such as male bodies, horses, mountains, and water constitute symbolic and emotional spaces conducive to reflection. Through layering colors and textures, he explores the tension between vulnerability and strength, allowing them to coexist within the same space.
