Jack, 2026

Mark Hellbusch

"Jack" is a work from the "Green at the End" series, characterized by a particularly balanced interplay of color depth and textured surface. The composition unfolds across a finely tuned spectrum of green tones that blend softly into one another, forming a tranquil, almost unified picture plane.
At the center of the painting, a slight density can be perceived, acting like a silent node within the surface. From here, the layers of color appear to expand and simultaneously recede. This subtle movement is reminiscent of natural processes of pressure and balance—systems in which forces build up and are simultaneously redistributed.
The surface displays a multitude of fine structures organically inscribed within the layers of paint. Traces, imprints, and slight elevations lend the painting a material depth without disrupting the overall composition's serenity.
The color depth is achieved through nuanced transitions between lighter, slightly warm greens and deeper, cooler areas. These gradations create a spatial effect that isn't immediately apparent but only becomes noticeable upon prolonged viewing.
Depending on the angle of the light, the perception of the surface changes significantly. Grazing light emphasizes the structure and highlights the three-dimensional quality, while even light underscores the painting's cohesive, elegant effect.
"Jack" represents a form of abstract painting characterized by restraint, complexity, and a subtle yet palpable inner dynamism.
