Output 8 belongs to the series, in which Mark Hellbusch explores the relationship between preparation, control, speed and chance.
The actual act of painting is preceded by a considerably longer period of preparation. Colors, tools and an initial visual order are established beforehand. Once the painting begins, this order changes within only a few minutes. Paint is dragged, layered, smeared and redirected. Speed and material take over part of the control, leaving little room for prolonged consideration or later correction.
In Output 8, violet, green, turquoise, red, orange and pink come together in a dense, vertically structured composition. Fields and traces of color overlap; some areas remain clearly separated while others merge. The prepared structure is still visible, but it is disrupted by spontaneous movements and new layers of paint. The resulting image exists somewhere between order and loss of control.
The title refers to the logic of digital systems and to communication with artificial intelligence: an input is followed by a process and finally an output. Hellbusch translates this principle into painting. The process itself is entirely analogue – paint, tools, movement and time take the place of digital processing.
The result can be prepared, but it cannot be fully predicted.
The plan determines the beginning – not the outcome.
