Description
Broken Still Life (2026) by Zakhar Shevchuk is a contemporary reinterpretation of the still life genre, where classical compositional stability is deliberately unsettled and restructured.
The painting presents a table-like form supporting a cluster of rounded shapes that evoke fruit, vessels, or organic objects. Yet these elements resist clear identification, dissolving into layered brushstrokes and gestural marks. This approach recalls the structural experiments of Paul Cézanne, who transformed still life into a dynamic system of relationships rather than a fixed depiction. In this work, that transformation is extended further, introducing instability and fragmentation as central elements.
Drips and fluid paint introduce a temporal dimension, suggesting that the image is not fixed but continuously evolving. The surface reveals traces of its own making, reinforcing the idea that the composition exists in a state of flux rather than completion. The muted palette of soft pinks, greys, and earth tones maintains a sense of cohesion while allowing subtle contrasts to emerge within the structure. This balance between control and dissolution gives the painting both visual clarity and expressive depth.
This work will appeal to collectors interested in contemporary painting that engages with art history while pushing its boundaries toward abstraction and conceptual interpretation.
Presentation
“I try to simplify the form to the point when it feels that nothing else shall be removed and only the essential elements remain. I transfer my impressions and self-reflections about objects into my paintings. I express what I feel rather than how I see, often arriving somewhere between figurative and abstract art." Zakhar Shevchuk
Zakhar Shevchuk is a young professional painter and draftsman, he holds a master in arts degree from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv, Ukraine) and now himself teaches at the academy. His artworks are held in public and private collections worldwide, furthermore, he often participates in various public projects, such as painting murals and other monumental installations.
With years Zakhar's artistic style moved away from academic realism (which always tended closer to expressionism) and towards the style that in somewhere on the edge between figurative art and abstraction. In many of his works, even those that may seem as fully abstract ones, you will find some elements that were intentionally added, aiming to trick your brain into believing that you have finally found something recognisable, something that matches the reality, but then you suddenly loose it, starting the search over and over again.
