Description
In The Edge of Resilience, Ukrainian artist Olena Sloboda transforms the idea of landscape into an emotional and psychological experience. Painted in oil on canvas, the work belongs to the artist's “internal landscapes" series, where the horizon becomes a symbolic line between tension and calmness, darkness and light, memory and renewal. Deep magenta, crimson, violet, and black tones interact with an intense glowing red-orange band that cuts through the composition with striking emotional force.
The painting combines expressive gestural movement with large atmospheric spaces, creating a visual rhythm that feels both meditative and charged with energy. Sloboda avoids literal representation, instead using color, texture, and movement to evoke states of endurance, emotional transformation, and silent inner strength. The glowing horizon line acts as a point of stability within the composition, gathering and containing the surrounding energy.
Inspired by the emotional impact of nature and the psychological resonance of color, the artist creates works that invite intuitive perception and reflection. The Edge of Resilience encourages viewers to enter a contemplative space where personal memories, emotions, and associations emerge naturally through the interaction of light, darkness, and atmosphere.
Presentation
Olena Sloboda is a contemporary Ukrainian painter based in Lviv, whose emotionally charged abstract and semi-abstract works explore the relationship between color, memory, atmosphere, and inner perception. Originally trained in fashion design at the Lviv National Academy of Arts, she graduated with distinction and initially built a successful career as a fashion designer before turning fully toward painting - the artistic medium she describes as closest to her inner world and emotional expression.
Working primarily in oil on canvas, Sloboda creates stylized impressions of nature transformed through gesture, texture, and chromatic energy. Rather than depicting landscapes literally, she seeks to convey their emotional resonance and invisible presence through layered surfaces, rhythmic brushwork, and expressive color fields. Her paintings often exist on the threshold between abstraction and recognition, allowing viewers to form their own associations, memories, and psychological responses.
For the artist, color functions not only as a visual element but also as an emotional catalyst capable of influencing mood, memory, and perception. Texture and movement become equally important components of her visual language, creating works that are atmospheric, intuitive, and deeply sensory. Inspired by nature, silence, and fleeting emotional states, Sloboda describes her paintings as portals between the visible and invisible worlds - spaces where intuition and emotion take precedence over narrative certainty.
Olena Sloboda has participated in exhibitions and art projects in Ukraine and internationally, including exhibitions in Switzerland, Spain, Ireland, the United Kingdom, Germany, Estonia, Canada, Poland, and the United States. Her practice continues to evolve through an ongoing exploration of emotional abstraction, color psychology, and the poetic relationship between human perception and the natural world.
