Description
Donald Duck is happy. Extremely, repeatedly, structurally happy. renders a single moment — the jump, the cap lifted from the head in pure exuberance — across multiple overlapping instances, building the image through repetition until joy starts to look like something else entirely. What begins as celebration accumulates into a kind of visual overload: the same gesture, the same duck, the same cap, layered until the canvas can barely contain it. The title names what repetition eventually does to even the most genuine emotion. — the sound, the character, the idiom for something fraudulent. — not catastrophe, but the specific structural failure that comes from too much of anything held too long. Executed in acrylic on a large-format 150 x 100 cm canvas, the work rhymes with Warhol's serial logic but lands somewhere more unstable: not the cool distance of mass production, but the dizzying sincerity of someone who jumped for joy once too many times and couldn't quite stop. Funny, frantic, and quietly exhausted.
Presentation
Mihai Mârza (b. 1985) is a Romanian contemporary painter based in Alba Iulia, working in large-format acrylic and mixed-media canvases that transform pop culture icons into layered meditations on memory, identity, and collective emotion.
His practice operates through controlled repetition and visual density: a single iconic figure — from anime characters to vintage cartoons — multiplied, distorted, and colliding until it sheds its original meaning and takes on new psychological weight. The result is work that sits at the intersection of Pop Art and emotional landscape, using the immediately recognizable language of mass media to explore what stays hidden beneath familiarity.
Working across painting and sculpture, Mârza maintains a consistent dialogue between image, surface, and cultural memory — inviting viewers to oscillate between nostalgia and disorientation, humor and unease.
