Description
The title promises sweetness. The painting delivers something else. assembles its cast with the bluntness of a fever dream: a redneck wolf — that cartoon archetype of crude appetite barely dressed in comic form — occupies the frame alongside a girl who is crying, explosions that don't belong to any particular narrative, accidents in progress, and the visual residue of exploitation rendered in acrylic on a 150 x 100 cm canvas. The word does the work that sugar always does in stories about harm: it names the surface, the coating, the thing that makes the approach seem safe. Mârza doesn't moralize. The painting doesn't lecture. It simply puts the ingredients together and lets the viewer sit with the discomfort of recognizing all of them — the wolf, the tears, the chaos — from Saturday morning television, from childhood, from everywhere. The familiar made uncomfortable. The comfortable made visible. This is what was always in the candy.
Presentation
Mihai Mârza (b. 1985) is a Romanian contemporary painter based in Alba Iulia, working in large-format acrylic and mixed-media canvases that transform pop culture icons into layered meditations on memory, identity, and collective emotion.
His practice operates through controlled repetition and visual density: a single iconic figure — from anime characters to vintage cartoons — multiplied, distorted, and colliding until it sheds its original meaning and takes on new psychological weight. The result is work that sits at the intersection of Pop Art and emotional landscape, using the immediately recognizable language of mass media to explore what stays hidden beneath familiarity.
Working across painting and sculpture, Mârza maintains a consistent dialogue between image, surface, and cultural memory — inviting viewers to oscillate between nostalgia and disorientation, humor and unease.
