Description
This work was born in a confined space — both literally and metaphorically.
The 120 x 40 format was a deliberate choice: the elongated, compressed canvas conveys a sense of constriction, loneliness, and limitation — feelings that so often accompany life in emigration. This is not merely a compositional decision, but a lived sensation: a life forced into narrow frames within a foreign city, a foreign country, a foreign system.
There, beneath the sound of running water, I allowed myself to be real. Naked — not only physically, but emotionally.
Because where, if not under streams of water, can one wash away exhaustion?
The shower becomes a space of cleansing.
From anxiety, fear, and loneliness.
A space for inner dialogue — and for pain that cannot be spoken aloud.
Presentation
Julie Punch is a contemporary painter whose work explores themes of identity, freedom, displacement, and psychological resilience. Originally from Russia, she currently lives and works in France.
As an LGBTQ+ refugee forced to leave her home country due to war and political repression, Julia draws upon personal experience to investigate the emotional consequences of migration, belonging, and self-discovery. Her paintings often examine the relationship between the individual and society, reflecting on how political and social realities shape inner life.
Through intimate narratives and symbolic imagery, her work invites viewers to engage with questions of memory, vulnerability, hope, and the search for meaning in times of uncertainty.
