Description
This work is part of a series dedicated to the experience of emigration and belonging.
The expression “white crow" is commonly used to describe a person who stands apart from the group — someone perceived as different, whether by choice or circumstance.
While emigration often intensifies this feeling, the experience of otherness rarely begins at the border. For many, it starts much earlier: within their own family, community, or society. Moving to a new country can simply make visible a feeling that has existed for years.
The painting reflects the tension between the desire to belong and the impossibility of fully blending in. It is about difference, isolation, and the lifelong search for a place where one does not have to hide who they are.
Presentation
Julie Punch is a contemporary painter whose work explores themes of identity, freedom, displacement, and psychological resilience. Originally from Russia, she currently lives and works in France.
As an LGBTQ+ refugee forced to leave her home country due to war and political repression, Julia draws upon personal experience to investigate the emotional consequences of migration, belonging, and self-discovery. Her paintings often examine the relationship between the individual and society, reflecting on how political and social realities shape inner life.
Through intimate narratives and symbolic imagery, her work invites viewers to engage with questions of memory, vulnerability, hope, and the search for meaning in times of uncertainty.
