Description
This captivating artwork presents a solitary lighthouse beneath a swirling, iridescent sky. The striking contrast between the lighthouse, solid and anchored, and the perpetually shifting heavens immediately evokes a sense of wonder. Shades of pink, blue, and green intertwine, creating an impression of dynamism and infinite depth. The visual effect evokes a sea of stars in perpetual motion, capturing a moment of celestial magic.
Crafted from mother-of-pearl on wood, the artwork exploits the material's shifting reflections and natural iridescence to accentuate the composition's rich palette. Depending on the angle of the light, the surface reveals subtle nuances that enhance the sense of movement and depth. This technique lends the scene a luminous and contemporary dimension while preserving the symbolic power of the lighthouse. The juxtaposition of this timeless element and the surrounding cosmic universe evokes themes of guidance, mystery, and transformation. Through its vibrant palette and bold composition, the artwork invites contemplation of nature's beauty and complexity, leaving a lasting impression on the viewer's imagination.
Presentation
Yu Jin-Goo has consistently explored the modernization of traditional fine art aesthetics, notably by reinterpreting mother-of-pearl—an emblematic material of traditional craftsmanship—through both pictorial and sculptural transformations. His artistic process involves meticulously layering countless thin sheets of mother-of-pearl onto wood or resin panels, a task demanding immense physical discipline.
Through this rigorous process, Yu conducts continuous experimentation to maximize the intrinsic projection and reflection properties of the material. This research functions as an optical exploration of light, based on the fluid movement of waves—a synthesis he describes as a "Multiple Wave," orchestrated by the harmonious interaction between light and surface.
On a metaphorical level, Yu's practice creates a "vitalist realm accomplished through labor." By utilizing potential kinetic effects that shift according to the viewer's perspective and movements, he breathes life into inanimate matter, offering the public a luminous and mystical artistic experience. His work transcends the medium's decorative history, transforming it into a contemporary language of light, depth, and vitality.
