_____
Landscape of Loire-Atlantique, France.
The artist is fascinated by the coexistence of two temporalities: the infinitely long time of the granite of the Côte Sauvage, and the fleeting time of the sky and the wind. Painting this landscape is for her an attempt to freeze the ephemeral—the shape of a cloud, the sun on the grass—onto the immutable rock.
The house and the path humanize a landscape of grandiose austerity. She was inspired by this edge where human life flirts with the harshness of the ocean. The dirt path serves as a poetic transition between the vertiginous shoreline and the safety of dry land.
The changing light of the Atlantic enhances this dialogue between Man and the Elements: it strikes the house, creating the luminous focal point of the canvas, while the rocks sink into warm russet shadows.
This painting is a meditation on our presence in the world. Along this path, one feels a solitude in the face of immensity which, far from being frightening, reveals itself as infinitely serene.
Presentation
Anne Baudequin is a landscape painter. Her work, inspired by observing nature outdoors, follows in the tradition of 19th-century French landscape painters. She loves the poetry of simple subjects: the paths of her village, the bank of a river, a cloud above the mountains. Painting in oils, "alla prima," she captures the fleeting effects of light with lively, spontaneous brushstrokes that lend her canvases a sense of movement.
Landscape has always been an object of contemplation for her, an open parenthesis outside of everyday life. From her first paintings at the age of 15, she naturally drew her inspiration from it. A graduate of the École nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d'Art in Paris, her studies enriched her with other practices in the visual arts, while definitively anchoring her passion for painting from life.
Having lived in the Auvergne region for thirty years, she contemplates the Loire gorges and the magnificent volcanic landscape from her studio. Her brushes tirelessly explore it, like a walk renewed by the light and the seasons. Her travels, particularly to the inexhaustible horizons of the sea, allow her to explore new ways of seeing light.
Her work humbly pays homage to the beauty of the world. Convinced that one can be touched by the sublime in the most familiar environment, she strives to transcribe its subtle nuances.
