Description
Nakano Takeko was born in Edo (Tokyo) in 1847. Trained in both literary and martial arts, she was later adopted by her teacher, with whom she worked as a martial arts instructor. In January 1868, the Japanese Civil War broke out, and Nakano Takeko commanded a unit of women fighting against the Imperial Army. During a charge, she was shot in the chest. To avoid being captured, she asked her sister, Yūko, to finish her off. Nakano Takeko died on the battlefield at the age of 21. Her body was taken by her sister and buried under a pine tree in the Aizu estate. A monument in her memory was later erected near her grave. The artist here pays tribute to this extraordinary woman, who is too little known in the West.
Presentation
Born in Sicily and living in France since her teens, Francesca Sangiorgi, known by her artist name Fragola de la Vega, has developed a highly personal body of work in just a few years. This work is characterized by a controlled paradox, as noted in the March-April 2026 edition: "extreme formal precision placed at the service of a deliberately unbalanced world" where the boundaries between dream and reality dissolve.
In this universe drawn in black and white and lit by red moons, a stormy sea brings to the surface fragments of childhood memories or imagination: wandering boats, flying fish, palms, exuberant plants, warrior or adventurous female figures.
But her compositions are also very erudite, "permeated by mythological, historical, and sometimes literary references," she explains. "There are always references, even if I don't mention them. I offer a journey, a waking dream, without ever imposing a narrative. What interests me is the silent dialogue with the viewer."
Fragola de la Vega's art constitutes a form of gentle, almost ironic, resistance to hardship. It evokes in the viewer a feeling of both melancholy and rebirth.
