Description
Urban art takes over the portrait here to deliver a contemporary and graphic vision. The intense gaze of a woman captures attention, partially masked by the thick collar of a knit sweater. The stencil work structures the volumes with surgical precision. The contrasts of ochre and earth tones sculpt the face and the textile.
The azure blue background dynamizes the composition. Geometric patterns intertwine in it, creating a play of architectural depth. Paint projections bring a touch of improvisation characteristic of graffiti culture. This spray paint technique combines the rigor of the line with the spontaneity of the gesture.
The whole exudes a quiet strength. The composition balances the softness of the features and the roughness of the urban support. This painting from 2025 testifies to a technical mastery where every shade of color emphasizes the subject's determination. The final rendering plays on the superposition of layers to create a marked visual relief.
Presentation
Raf Urban is a French street artist born in the 70s. He grew up in the suburbs of Paris under the influence of the emerging street art culture of the early 80s.
The main subjects of his work are women, which is a big source of inspiration for the artist, from soul singer Amy Winehouse, the Pakistani women's rights activist Malala Yousufzai to Angela Davis, a member of the "Black Panthers" a civil rights activist in the United States. He represents as well male icons of the popular culture such as David Bowie, Mohamed Ali and Jimi Hendrix.
To make his artwork, he uses paint bombs and stencils which allow him to express himself in all sorts of urban supports which he enjoys modifying, for example on road signs or metro maps. We can also find his creations on the walls of the cities, mostly in the region of Paris as well in other cities where he has been.
