Description
This portrait captures a gaze turned upwards. The composition focuses on the intensity of a female face. The work relies on a marked contrast between ocher tones and deep shadows.
The artist uses spray paint to sculpt the volumes. The graphic rendering evokes the codes of street art. Fine and irregular lines run across the skin like cracks.
The neutral gray background makes the warmth of the brown tones stand out. A few orange splatters add a touch of dynamism in the upper left.
The gold earrings add a precious and realistic detail. The stencil technique allows for rigorous precision in the tracing of the lines.
This 2025 creation is part of an approach to celebrating female figures. The technical execution combines urban spontaneity with a classical mastery of portraiture. The whole ends with a discreet signature in the lower right corner.
Presentation
Raf Urban is a French street artist born in the 70s. He grew up in the suburbs of Paris under the influence of the emerging street art culture of the early 80s.
The main subjects of his work are women, which is a big source of inspiration for the artist, from soul singer Amy Winehouse, the Pakistani women's rights activist Malala Yousufzai to Angela Davis, a member of the "Black Panthers" a civil rights activist in the United States. He represents as well male icons of the popular culture such as David Bowie, Mohamed Ali and Jimi Hendrix.
To make his artwork, he uses paint bombs and stencils which allow him to express himself in all sorts of urban supports which he enjoys modifying, for example on road signs or metro maps. We can also find his creations on the walls of the cities, mostly in the region of Paris as well in other cities where he has been.
