Description
A bold exploration of intimacy and feminine presence. This 2024 acrylic painting captures a quiet moment of domesticity. A nude figure reclines in a state of total relaxation. She holds a cup, lost in a moment of personal reflection. The composition emphasizes the natural curves and volume of the body. Soft ochre tones contrast with deep, swirling blues in the bedding.
The artist utilizes her experimental background to challenge traditional gender roles. There is a fearless approach to the depiction of the female form. The scene avoids the voyeuristic, focusing instead on empowerment and comfort. Rhythmic brushstrokes create a sense of fluidity across the canvas. The atmosphere is one of serene solitude.
This artwork blends the mundane with the sensual. It transforms a simple morning routine into a statement of bodily autonomy. The light falls gently across the skin, highlighting the warmth of the palette. A window in the background opens the interior space to a hazy, impressionistic sky. The narrative concludes with the tactile detail of the sheets and the stillness of the pose.
Presentation
Dzovig Arnelian (b. 1996) is a Beirut-based Lebanese-Armenian artist whose works address themes related to gender roles, feminism, and the criticism of patriarchy. Her practice is mainly focused on painting and exploring her body as her paint brush, etching, engraving, and photography. Her depiction of deeply personal subjects is bold yet sensitive, offering a view of her world in an intimate, subtle and vulnerable manner.
Arnelian's contemporary expressionist style is typified by her use of bold and vibrant colors and she also experiments with versatile mediums, using material from her everyday life that evoke feelings of sensuality, love, fertility, and intimacy. Arnelian's bold yet delicate expression challenges prevalent stereotypes about femininity, sexuality and feelings we trap and express in our bodies.
Arnelian obtained her bachelor's degree in plastic arts in 2019 and later completed her master's degree in fine arts in 2021 from the Lebanese University. She held her first solo exhibition "24 Universes" in 2020 at Artlab Gallery in Beirut and has since participated in several solo and group exhibitions in Egypt, Spain, the United States and Japan. Her works have also been acquired by many private collectors from across the world.
Dzovig Arnelian is also the founder of Arneli Art Gallery.
