Description
This mixed media painting captures a raw, visceral energy. The composition centers on a distorted figure emerging from a pale blue void. Bold black strokes collide with fluid white swirls. These gestures create a sense of urgent movement. The artist employs a sophisticated balance of chaos and structure. Subtle touches of muted green break the monochromatic dominance. This palette adds a ghostly, organic quality to the scene.
The approach reflects a deep exploration of human anatomy. Forms are not depicted literally but are felt through emotional intensity. Each line suggests a struggle or a memory. The layering of pigments builds a dense, tactile surface. This technique invites the viewer to decipher the fragmented shape within. It is a study of nature and social existence translated into abstract language. The piece dates from 2016 and showcases a mastery of spontaneous mark-making. The final result is an evocative dialogue between light and shadow.
Presentation
Johnny Semaan is a Beirut-based Syrian artist born in Lattakia. He graduated from Damascus University with a bachelor degree in fine arts in 2007. He was then an instructor at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Tishreen University in Lattakia. He obtained his Masters degree in Plastic Arts from the Lebanese University in Beirut in 2019.
Johnny is also the recipient of the 2019 Boghossian Foundation Prize in Lebanon for painting. He has participated in several solo and group exhibitions both locally (in Syria and Lebanon) and internationally. In his body of work, he focuses on the human anatomy, through which he explores themes related to human nature and social life.
