Description
This work was created over a period of six months. Its central visual axis is an octagonal geometric structure, surrounded by a crossing of intersecting lines. This composition skillfully borrows from classical Chinese gardens the technique of the "panoramic frame" proper to lattice windows or full moon doors, thus creating a depth within depth, a kind of "picture within a picture". I sought to compel the viewer's gaze to concentrate on the center, as if scrutinizing, through an old barred window, a strange rock at the back of the garden. This treatment alternating between exterior darkness and interior clarity gives the Taihu stone, in the center, a relief almost illuminated by a spotlight; it also breaks the flatness of the canvas and infuses the whole with a silent life, imbued with a strong dramatic tension. I superimposed dense blocks of color, creating a spotted, thick, and grainy texture, which gives the canvas a striking physicality. This technique blurs the sharp contours: the stone and the background permeate each other with touches, producing a dreamlike, vaporous effect, as if eaten away by time.
My conceptual approach for this work is both a tribute to the aesthetic of traditional gardens and a metaphor for the exploration of the secret depths of the mind.
